DC Public Schools are back in session and FLOC is gearing up to welcome students back to our programs the week of September 15th. Student and volunteer recruitment remains a priority as we aim to enroll more students and sign up more volunteers. Our Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP) is actively recruiting volunteers to continue our one-on-one tutoring model. If you are interested in helping a child achieve success in school or know someone who is, please contact our Recruitment Coordinator, Jessica Goode, at (202)349-3512 or jgoode@floc.org. You can also help us by making donations of school supplies or by making a financial contribution.
Each FLOC program (NTP, LITM and EG&A) has been working hard despite a busy summer schedule to prepare for school year programming. A lot of new ideas are coming out as staff prepares exciting curricula to actively engage all students throughout the year.
Leaders in the Making (LITM) is gearing up for another adventure-filled year, with plans for exploring local environments and cultures, engaging in service projects, using modern technology to discover and learn about great American leaders, partnering with other nonprofits to learn about our world, engaging in self-exploration and reflection for personal growth and empowerment and much, much more! This year, Leaders students will have the opportunity to meet new people and participate in many field trips and hands-on learning activities. We are excited to have many returning and many new Leaders participants this year! The Leaders in the Making students spent the summer participating in challenge activities at our Outdoor Education Center in Harpers Ferry to help prepare for another year of leadership.
The upcoming fall will usher in new students and tutors, placing the current focus of preparations for the reading curricula on simplifying information and trainings. To boost creative lesson planning, activity boards with descriptions of a multitude of unique enrichment games and manipulative instructions are currently under construction to be placed at all sites for the convenience of tutors. Additionally, adolescent training materials are being supplemented with video of activity implementation to provide a visualization of essential lesson requirements. As the start of the school year approaches, we will continue to seek innovative ways to increase tutor confidence for that very first day.
