During the 2008-2009 winter quarter, Leaders in the Making (LITM) students participated in a three month Global Cultures project. This project was facilitated by Jean Janicke from Children’s Culture Connection (CCC), a nonprofit organization in DC that connects young Americans with youth in other countries. Specifically, LITM students were connected to students from Nyumbani, a school and home in Kenya for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
Through a variety of hands on activities, LITM students had the opportunity to explore and learn about Kenyan cultures and ways of life. LITM students practiced speaking Swahili, learned facts about Kenya, played traditional Kenyan games, read Kenyan storybooks, learned about the Green Movement in Kenya, created photo journals to send to their Kenyan counterparts, saw pictures of the Nyumbani youth and learned about the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Further, after learning that Nyumbani students needed backpacks and school supplies, LITM students designed and implemented a cell phone/ink cartridge recycling drive to raise funds to purchase and send these items to Kenya.
