On November 12th, students gathered with local author Lorraine Dowdy Gordon as she shared her book Dancing with Momspirations which demonstrated the powerful affect of words. Students listened intently as Ms. Gordon read her book and even involved students in the reading process. Students were eager to should out affirmations of their own towards the end of the reading.
Following the reading, students broke up into several groups to work on different stations. At each station, high school Educational Guidance and Advocacy students assisted the younger children with the various activities. At one station, students created book covers for a book about themselves. Another station included creating positive affirmations through the use of mirrors. The mirrors provided the canvas for students to write their own affirmations. Students spent time brainstorming positive words to describe themselves and were excited to share the words with others. Students participated in other activities like choosing books to take home from a used book station and signing a positive word contract while waiting their turn to get their book signed. Students were eager to show their work to parents nearby.
To wrap up the evening, staff, students, families, and board members gathered over food and students and parents received gifts to take home. Gift bags included book lights, bookmarks, a copy of the book Dancing with Momspirations signed by the author herself, as well as the items they made at the various stations. Parents received a tip sheet on how to develop a love for literacy at home.
Board members and Friends of FLOC from the community were able to come together and share a love for reading and positive words.
