Students in the Educational Guidance and Advocacy (EG&A) program got a feel for a variety of industries and professions that interest them in FLOC's first ever Shadow Day.
They came back raving about the things they saw and people they met. Our partners for the day included BNA, The Hay Adams Hotel, TerpSys, Common Cause, AED, Adams Bank, and USAID.
Students in the Educational Guidance & Advocacy program were privileged to participate in FLOC’s first ever Shadow Day. Our students had the chance to experience a diverse set of careers, and get a feel for some industries and professions that interest them. Our partners for the day included BNA, The Hay Adams, TerpSys, Common Cause, AED, Adams Bank, and USAID. Our students were blown away by the day, and came back raving about the things they saw and people they met. It was a day that exceeded our expectations. Other partners have expressed interest in hosting FLOC students, and we are planning more shadowing opportunities this spring. EG&A staff is always looking to expand opportunities for students, especially in the field of careers.
Early on the morning of March 24th, the EG&A staff and ten High School Juniors left for a five day/four night tour of colleges in Pennsylvania. In that time the students and staff visited nine different schools: Lincoln University, Temple University, Villanova University, Easter University, University of the Arts, Philadelphia University, Haverford College, Albright College and Franklin and Marshall College. These schools ranged from private, rural colleges with 1,200 students to large public universities in downtown Philadelphia. They addressed students whose interests varied from majoring in the arts (including fine arts, fashion design and music) to pre-medical studies and engineering. Students also had opportunities to experience many cultural events including an NBA basketball game, the Institute of Contemporary Art, a play at the historic Walnut Street Theater, and of course, the opportunity to dine on Philly Cheesesteaks! Most importantly, students genuinely enjoyed the trip and expressed how their understanding of the college search process had developed due to their experience.
