Teach a child to dream -- become a tutor with For Love of Children (FLOC)

We are currently recruiting volunteers for the 2009-2010 school year!  Did you know that only 43 of every 100 students that enter DC Public Schools will graduate high school within 5 years? Of those 43 only 29 will enroll in post secondary education and of those, only 9 will attain a post secondary degree within 5 years.

Our goal is for every one of our students to remain connected to their education, stay on grade level, and grow as students, as citizens and as leaders.

At FLOC we believe in building and maintaining relationships with our students by offering a continuum of educational services. We also believe in building a network of volunteers to assist us in meeting the educational needs of our students.

To be successful this school year, we need your help! Because our volunteers each work one-on-one with a student, we can only serve as many kids as we have tutors. Our tutoring program always has a wait-list, so each new volunteer has the chance to allow us to impact the life of one more child in D.C.

We are always looking for volunteers to assist us in every step of the way. If your schedule prevents you from becoming a tutor, we still want you to get involved! Here are some ways:

  • Become a tester
  • Volunteer for homework time help
  • Help plan and implement FLOC events
  • Be a writing coach
  • Help facilitate workshops
  • Assist students in creating resumes
  • Share your educational or professional path
  • Host a tour of your company
  • Participate in Career Day
  • Be a guest speaker
  • Coach students in public speaking / debate
  • And more!

If you have a special skill, hobby, or expertise, or if you have any other ideas about how you would like to get involved, please let us know! We appreciate your interest, your consideration, and your time. Working together, we can truly make a difference in the lives of children in D.C.
